Arsenal Sets Record for Victories in the Premier League!
Arsenal not only keeps their Premier League title hopes alive after defeating Manchester United. The Gunners also set a record for victories in this competition!
Visiting Old Trafford on Sunday (12/5/2024) evening WIB, Arsenal, needing a victory, took the lead in the 20th minute through Leandro Trossard's goal. Arsenal attempted to add more goals but it didn't happen until the end of the match.
Arsenal still won 1-0 and returned to the top of the English Premier League standings with 86 points from 37 matches, one point ahead of Manchester City who have played 36 matches.
With that, Arsenal will compete with City for the league title until the final week. The result is certainly a relief for Arsenal considering their poor record at Old Trafford.
Before this match, Arsenal had only won four times and lost nine times out of 31 visits. Even in the last 16 matches, Arsenal only won once in the 2020/2021 season with a score of 1-0.
For the first time since 2006/2007, Arsenal won both home and away against MU. In the first meeting at the Emirates last September, Arsenal won 3-1.
The result also brought Arsenal to a new club record regarding the number of victories in the Premier League. Arsenal has now collected 27 wins, more than when they were unbeaten champions in 2003/2004.
This total number of wins is only surpassed by the record of 29 wins in 1970/1971 and 28 wins in 1930/1931. Can this winning record lead Arsenal to the league title? We'll have to wait until next week.
We needed a win in a very difficult place today. Our history here hasn't been good, there's a lot at stake here, and we're happy with the result," said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as quoted by BBC Sport.
