Thiago Motta's Magic Leads Bologna to Champions League Qualification
Bologna secures a ticket to the Champions League next season. The Rossoblu currently sit in third place in Serie A with 67 points. Their points tally is now out of reach for AS Roma, who have 60 points and sit in fifth place with two matches remaining.
Bologna's qualification for the Champions League next season is historic. This marks the first time in 60 years that Bologna will compete in European competition since their last appearance in 1964.
The key figure behind Bologna's historic achievement is their coach, Thiago Motta. Motta has transformed Bologna from a mid-table team into an entertaining, attacking side.
Motta joined Renato dal'Arra in the middle of the 2022/2023 season, filling the position left by the late Sinisa Mihajlovic, who faced health issues. Bologna continued to show improvement under Motta's guidance.
The Italian passport holder coach implements an attacking pattern by building up from the back. This collective approach is executed proficiently by the Bologna players.
According to WhoScored, Bologna ranks second in Serie A for possession with an average possession of 57.8%, just behind Napoli with 61.6%.
They also play aggressively to regain possession when they lose the ball, leading Serie A in average tackles.
While Bologna hasn't been particularly sharp in the attacking third with only 51 goals scored, Motta's possession-based style of play has made them defensively solid. They've conceded only 27 goals, the second-best defensive record in Serie A after Inter Milan, who have conceded only 19 goals.
Motta has also managed to nurture several young players. Riccardo Calafiori (21 years old) and Joshua Zirkzee (22 years old) are two young players who have flourished under Motta.
